Just a reminder that we are closed on Sunday but OPEN ON SATURDAY! Come join us on Saturday and get in a good skate before you gorge on Chocolate on Sunday. If you wonder how we decide when and when not to be open it’s based on attendance, not religious reasons. For instance, we tried being open on Mother’s Day the first two years (2000 and 2001) and well, we are no longer open on Mother’s Day.
Outdoor trail classes to begin on Saturday April 24th. Marymoor Park, Athletic Slab, adjacent to the Velodrome and climbing Wall. The fourth class will occur at Crossroads Parks for Hills & Hazards
Classes will occur in four week sessions at 1pm each Saturday, weather permitting. These classes are for those who are interested in learning to trail skate which includes: etiquette, striding, outdoor hazards and hills. There is a one week break between the third and fourth weeks of the course. Dates are: April 24, May Day (May 1st), (skip a week) May 15th and May 22nd. First three classes at Marymoor, last one at Crossroads. Cirque du Soleil will take over the Marymoor location for their June shows but their set up may require us to change our location, if so we will let you know.
Classes run 60 minutes each and are the same cost as the regular classes. They are NOT included in the price of an Unlimited Pass as those are only for regularly scheduled rink classes. However, the price for the outdoor classes, for Unlimited Pass holders is only $15 per class. Otherwise, for everyone else, you can buy a four pack or a six pack and those prices will apply. Drop in, as always (or Pay-as-you-go) is $20. Just to be sure I’m clear, as I often am not: If you buy a pack of classes for your rink classes, they can be used for outdoors and vice-versa.
Finally, you must register for these classes each week. Due to our weather challenges, and potential location changes, we need to be able to contact you. To register, email us and include your phone number. We require a minimum of 3 skaters total for classes A & B and a minimum of 3 skaters for Class C. We do not expect to continue to offer this later, so consider taking it now. If we receive enough requests we would happily offer the series again, but it may not happen.

We will be offering two days of Spring Break Camp next week, Monday (March 29 and Tuesday March 30 only. (Wed is a possibility if we get a few more signed up). The camp will run 9-noon but early drop off, by 8:30 is offered.
The camp has lots of kids, but we also always have adults who skate separately. For the adults we offer one-on-one for 10-15 minutes then practice time for them, then return to follow up. It’s like an extended private or semi private lesson. We also offer an opportunity for you to come for 90 minutes for $20, sort of recess for you. It’s a great way to take your skills up a notch and there is plenty of rink space for you.
$35 per day for half day campers, $5 skate rental. We will send out an email to all the campers on what to bring/wear and any other important details.
Donate your old skates?
With the number of skate programs we have going on, consider donating the skates you no longer use… we’ll get you a donation receipt!
Housekeeping: While we rent the rink for certain hours in the morning, we need to leave the building as soon as possible so the Skate King Staff can get set up for their session. For those of you in the snack bar, if you could leave that area about the time our music starts for the final play/skate (10am on Saturday and 10:30am on Sunday) that would help them out tremendously. That is their birthday party area and with some 75 birthdays participants a session, set up is key to controlling the chaos. Thanks for your understanding.
Impromptu/Interpretive Performance? One of our skaters is going to Chicago for the National Inline Figure Skating competition in late April to compete in the Interpretive Dance portion (they will play a song three times and then you have to go skate it). Having not competed in 37 years she thought she ought to get out in front of an audience so she could get over her fear of doing so. Your indulgence at the end of the sessions for the 2 minute program would be great. She says not to expect much, but that one should work through their fears to become the best they can be, on and off skates. Here we go…. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Old news/reminder:
Summer Camps on the eastside will occur on the following dates: the week of July 19th & August 23rd. (Monday to Friday 9 to noon or 9 to 4pm). Camps are full day camps, but you may attend just the half day if that works better. The morning session is for skating the afternoon includes play time, a different way every day. Prices and further details will be up on the web soon, but these dates are set, so you can count on them.
The Jammer, a play written by Rolin Jones and directed by Terri Weagant runs at the www.Balagantheater.org until April 3rd. Runs on Thursday through Sundays in the evening. (1117 E Pike, Seattle). This theatre is quite small and the entrance is a bit of a hole in the wall. But, you can buy cocktails and take then into the theatre. It truly has a plot which takes place when guys were in the derby too. It’s funny, it’s quirky, it’s heartwarming and it’s all about skating. Hmm, it’s never all about the skating, it’s always about so much more. Hope you can sneak this into your schedule one evening.
Later awesome skaters, later,

Now get out there and skate!
March 11, 2010
It’s rainy days like these that make me get up out of the chair, grab my trail skates and place them prominently in the house so I can remember that sunnier days, er outside skate days are ahead. As soon as we get another dry weekend day, we’ll open the fire doors and the instructors will take those in the B3/B4 class out the door and under the covered walkway to will practice your braking (voluntarily of course). The pavement is smooth but still shows you how important the perfect scissor is for outdoor skating and that braking outside is much different than learning to brake on the rink. Once you are doing it well, you will go out the fire door on the other side of rink where it’s a bit more bumpy, chunky and well, not smooth at all. The idea is that this will allow those of you who have not skated outdoors to transition safely at your own pace. Our goal is to set you up for success if your goal is to skate outside. Trail skating is in your future!
Losing sleep? Yep, this weekend it is the dreaded Daylight savings time where we lose an hour of sleep…. On Sunday we’ll make a larger pot of coffee.
Healthy Treats? The treats up at the snack table will be more healthy in keeping with the goals of the school. While the Director has gone vegan, these treats may not be completely vegan, but they will be eggless. New recipes might mean a clunker now and then, but hopefully they will continue to nourish you so you can skate better. One of the many reasons they are provided is that it furthers our goal of building community—when we eat together, we nourish each other. The treats and coffee are for everyone at the schools, participants and fans alike! Enjoy!
Another School Break Camp? Yes indeed, the Spring Break has arrived. Lake Wash School Districts is March 29-April 2 and Bellevue’s is April 5-9. We cannot offer camps both weeks and typically only offer the Lake Washington School Dates. Thus, we have a camp coming up at the end of the month: March 29-April 2. Costs will be the same as the Mid Winter Camp. Register early simply by sending me an email.
If there is enough interest for a Bellevue School Dist one, we’d offer it if we could fill the camp….. send us your requests.
The Eddy Matzger clinic is happening in Seattle the weekend of May 21/22. While I think we have great instructors, no top notch instructors at this school, we have all learned from Eddy how to skate better and how to improve our teaching. He is amazing. www.skatefarm.com Eddy teaches trail skating technique for the newbie through the super advanced. What a weekend. Just for fun here is the video for Eddy skating Mt. Kilimanjaro: This guy can and will skate anywhere!
We have our regular classes this weekend:
Saturday: 8am Level 4-5-6, 9:10am B1-2-3 adults and B1-2-3-4/5 kids. Slaloms too, of course. Desk closes at 8:50.
We’ll be offering a skate prep class after classes on a Saturday next month (April). This is all about skates, wheels, maintaining them, everything you need to get ready. Might even have a skate and gear swap. Details to follow.

Hey Skaters!
Before you head to the table laden with nine courses of food, join us for our annual Thanksgiving Open Skate. This year we will be a fundraiser with proceeds going toward supporting Skate Journeys and our new program with Secondary Bilingual Cultural Orientation Center (SBOC). At SBOC, we are teaching immigrant girls, who have no other PE program, how to skate (further details below). Admission is free. Suggested minimum donation is $10-$20. Our goal is to raise $500.00. You do not need to be a student at Skate Journeys to attend. Skaters who have not signed a waiver for this year will need to do so, and all skaters will need to wear protective gear. Gear will be available free of charge on a first come first serve basis. We suggest you bring your own helmet. This is a chance to get some exercise, chat with the others, get a little practice in and have fun. Most of the instructors will be there and will be happy to help you with whatever you are working on, just ask—we would love to help.
Doors will open at 8:20, runs 8:30-10:30. No structured classes, but instructors available for help.
Holiday Camp for Adults & Kids is set. Dates are: Dec 21, 22, 23 & Dec 28, 29 & 30. Camp requires minimum of 7 campers per day. Cost is $35 per day. You do not need to attend all days, but you MUST RSVP. Skates $5 per day up to a maximum of $15. Register by emailing or going to our PayPal page and using the MISC Cart button. Include in the notes the name of the camper(s) and days you are taking the camp
Quad Class THIS weekend, Sunday night 6-8pm.
SBOC is part of the Seattle Public School system and was founded in 1980 in response to a large wave of immigrants from Southeast Asia. Today it is one of only a few schools nation-wide designed as a preliminary educational portal through which immigrant children pass in their quest for academic achievement and full participation in American society. Some students come with extensive schooling, needing only English proficiency and cultural orientation; others have never before attended school. Students come from all over the world. Thirty-four languages and dialects are currently spoken at the SBOC.
We hope your holiday is safe and enjoyable whatever and wherever you are.
